[Singapore] Virus fears postpone PetExpo

2020’s seventh edition of the annual Singapore PetExpo, scheduled for July 24–26, has been postponed while the country, and the rest of the world, continues to deal with the coronavirus disease (COVID-19). Show organizers said they will inform attendees, exhibitors and stakeholders once a new date for the event has been confirmed.

COVID-19 in Singapore

As of March 9, 2020, 160 people in the tiny island country have been infected by the disease. With a population of 5.7 million, Singapore was among the earliest locations outside China to report cases of the coronavirus disease.

An explanation on PetExpo’s website states that “In view of the recent development and advisory from Singapore’s Ministry of Health, PetExpo will be postponed to a later date. The health and well-being of our attendees, staff and stakeholders are a priority and we will adopt precautionary measures in line with the recommendations by the authorities.”

About PetExpo

Show organizers reported that in 2019, PetExpo welcomed over 31,150 public visitors, more than 8,800 pets, 240 plus brands, 102 exhibitors and several animal welfare groups, which collectively made the show 60% bigger than its first edition in 2014. PetExpo is Singapore’s largest pet fair that caters to the needs of pets and pet owners while promoting responsible pet ownership. Domestic and international brands of pet food and other pet care companies have attended the show over the years to promote current products or launch new ones. The show also draws participation from local and foreign visitors.

PetExpo 2020’s postponement follows the same developments happening with many major public events scheduled around the world as the threat from COVID-19 continues to escalate. The disease also resulted in more travel restrictions imposed by countries that dramatically impede attendance to trade shows, concerts and sports events.

China is Singapore’s largest export market and biggest source of international tourists.
